Overview
Rudkhan Castle, constructed during the Sasanian Empire (224 – 651 CE), served as a military medieval fortress to safeguard the northern region from intrusions by southern Arab forces. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous rounds of reconstruction and fortification. Although the castle was mainly utilized for subversive purposes against the ruling authority for much of its existence, it has sustained significant amounts of violence and conflict and has managed to endure, situated discreetly within the forests of northern Gilan. Significantly, Rudkhan Castle represents one of the most remarkably preserved fortifications in ancient Iran.
Era Built
Built after the fall of House of Sasan (224 – 651 CE) against the invading Muslim armies to fortify the Caspian regions of Iran.
The castle was first renovated by Sultan Hesam al-Din Amire Dabbaj between 918-921 Lunar Hijri. This information is mentioned in an ancient inscription found at the entrance gate of the castle, which is now kept in Rasht Museum. The castle was initially built for military purposes, to defend the north of Iran against Arab invaders. However, in later eras, the castle was mainly used for uprisings and riots against the central power in the country. For example, during the Zand dynasty era, it was used by Hedayat Khan for this purpose.
