بومِه‌مَر یا " مارِ پشت‌بام" در بین اهالی مازندران، سید و سرور تمام مارهاست. این مار که احتمالا نوعی مار جعفری سیاه است در پشت‌بام خانه‌های قدیمی زندگی می‌کند. برخی معتقدند که این مار نگهبان خانه سادات، افراد نیک و درستکار، و اماکن مقدس و دفینه‌هاست. این مار را دارای عمری بسیار طولانی دانسته‌اند، به گونه‌ای که روایت می‌شود این مار تا هفت نسل در برخی از خانه‌ها زیسته است. پدران به فرزندان خود وصیت می‌کرده‌اند که از آزار این مار خودداری کنند و در روزهای گرم، کاسه‌ای آب برای بومه‌مر در پشت‌بام بگذارند. در روایت‌های دیگر آمده است که این مار برای دفاع از حق مظلوم و نیز خانه‌ای که در آن ساکن است، می‌تواند مهاجمان را با یک گزش از پای دربیاورد، اما با انسان‌های دیگر کاری ندارد.

According to the people of Mazandaran (northern Iran), Bom-e-Mar, or the Snake On The Roof, is the master of all snakes. This snake, which is probably a venomous viper, lives on the roof of old houses. Some say it's the guardian of oppressed, sacred places and buried treasures. It lives a long life. Some even say this snake could live in certain homes for seven generations. Fathers tell their sons, on their will, not to hurt this snake and to leave a bowl of water on the roof on warmer days. According to some tales, in order to protect the house they live in, this snake can knock down the intruders using only one bite. It is believed that this snake does not seek to hurt people who do not have mal-intent.
