آب لاکو آبلاکو یا اُو لاکو در گیلکی به معنی لاکپشت است. ولی معنای تحت اللفطی آن را «دخترِ آب» هم میتوان پنداشت.
افسانه ای در این باب میان مردم گیلک نقل می‌شود که در زمان های دور تازه عروسی که در خانه تنها بود، دیگی آب را گرم کرده و آن را در تشتی ریخته و مشغول حمام کردن بود که ناگهان پدرشوهرش وارد خانه می شود. (خانه های قدیمی گیلان و مازندران دیوار و حصار نداشتند) تازه عروس برای آنکه پدر شوهرش او را لخت نبیند ، تشت آب را بر روی خود می گذارد و به این ترتیب تبدیل به آب لاکو یا لاکپشت می شود.
روایت دیگری از این افسانه: روزی در حمام میان عروس و مادر شوهر بگو مگو در گرفت ،مادر شوهر عروس را نفرین کرد و عروس شرمنده شد و طاس حمام را بر سر خود گذاشت و آنگاه به شکل لاک پشت در آمد.

Āb-Laku in the Gilaki dialect means turtle (dialect used in Gilan, located in the northern part of Iran), but also sounds like [the water girl]. There is a folk tale around this word among the Gilak. It’s said that a long time ago, there used to be a woman that had just gotten married. One day when she was alone in the house, she decided to warm up some water and pour it into a basin to wash up. Suddenly, while she was showering, her father-in-law came home (old houses in northern parts of Iran, such as Gilan and Mazandaran, didn't have fences). Not wanting to be seen naked by her father-in-law, the girl hid under the basin and turned into Āb-Laku/turtle.
According to another story, one day, the newlywed and her mother-in-law got into a fight in the bath. The mother-in-law cursed at the girl. Feeling embarrassed, the girl put the bowl on her head and turned into Āb-Laku/turtle.
