کرگدن یا ارباب صحرا، موجودی افسانه‌ای است که گفته می‌شود در دشت‌های سرسبز هندوستان و ایران زندگی می‌کرده است. تصویر «کرگدن» در هنر شمال هند نیز دیده شده است.
روایت است که همان‌گونه که «تک‌شاخ» را تنها باکره‌ها می‌توانند رام کنند، «کرگدن» نیز توسط باکره‌ها رام می‌شود. این موجود با حیوانات دیگر وحشیانه برخورد می‌کند.
این «کرگدن» از نمونه‌ی هندی آن که برای اولین بار در سده ۱۰ یا ۱۱ توصیف شده، منشأ گرفته است. بعدها در آثار نویسندگان دیگری به موجودی افسانه‌ای با ویژگی‌هایی عجیب و غریب مثل شاخ و خاصیت شفابخشی اشاره شده است.

The master of wilderness' or 'Kargadan' is the only mythical creature that is said to have lived in Hindustan and Iran's flourishing fields. Kargadan has been seen in the artworks of northern Hindustan. It is said that just like with unicorns, only a virgin can tame the Kargadan. The Kargadan would be brutal to other people. This picture of the Kargadan was inspired by the Indian description in the 10th or 11th century. Later a mythical creature was mentioned in some works by various authors. In these works, Kargadan was mentioned as a strange creature with weird features like having a horn or the power of healing.
