اسطوره ای از خلیج فارس
مادر دریا از موجوداتی است که بیشتر در میان صیادان مروارید رواج داشته است. برخی از صیادان مروارید ادعای رویت زنی را در زیر آب دارند که بچه ی شیرخواره ای در آغوش گرفته است. این زن ازغواصان خواسته تا گهواره ای برای فرزندش ساخته و برای او ببرند و مادر دریا در ازای گهواره چند مروارید درشت به صیادان پاداش میدهد.
غواصی دیگر حکایت کرده است، هنگامی که مشغول صید مروارید در ژرفای دریا بوده، چشمش به زنی که مشغول تکان دادن گهواره ی نوزادی بوده افتاده است. زن از غواص میخواهد تا نزد او و فرزندش بماند. غواص با اشاره می‌گوید که دیگر نفسی برای ماندن ندارد، اما زن با نفس خود به دور او حبابی می‌سازد و می‌گوید اندکی پیش ما بمان. ناگهان، چند زن دریایی با سبدهای رنگارنگ به مناسبت تولد بچه زن دریایی و برای سر سلامتی می‌آمدند. در روی کشتی که از دیر آمدن غواص نگران شده بودند، طنابی را که یک سر آن به پای غواص بسته شده بود کشیدند و غواص بی‌هوش را روی عرشه آوردند. وی پس از به هوش آمدن داستان مادر حامل گهواره را تعریف میکند.
صیادان مروارید معتقدند اگر مادر دریا با غواصی صحبت کند صید او رونق پیدا میکند. همچین اگر گهواره ای به تور صیادان گیر کند، آن ها گهواره را به آغوش دریا بازگردانده و به سرعت از محل دور میشوند.

In the belief of the people of the Persian Gulf, there is a creature called the "Mother of the Sea". The mother of the sea has an upper body similar to a human and a lower body similar to a fish. Belief in him is more prevalent among pearl fishermen. Some of them claim to have seen a woman underwater holding an infant. This woman asked the divers to make a cradle for her child and take it to her so that she would reward the fishermen with some large pearls in exchange for the cradle.
Another diver says that when fishing for pearls in the deep sea, his eyes fell on a woman who was rocking her baby's cradle. The woman asks the diver to stay with her and her child. The diver points and says that he has no more breath to stay, but the woman creates a bubble around him with her breath and tells him to stay with them for a while. Suddenly, some mermaids came with colorful baskets to celebrate the baby's birthday and for good health. The people on the ship, who were worried about the diver being late, pulled the rope, one end of which was tied to the diver's leg, and brought the unconscious diver to the deck. After regaining consciousness, he tells the story of his mother and the cradle.
Pearl fishermen believe if the mother of the sea talks to a diver, their catch will prosper. Similarly, if a cradle gets caught in the fishermen's net, they return the cradle to the sea and quickly move away from the place in fear of retaliation.
