نامگیر در باورهای مردم افغانستان موجودی‌ست شبیه به جن که کار او تسخیر انسان‌هاست. نامگیر نام قربانی خود را سه بار صدا می‌زند. اگر آن انسان هر سه بار جواب " بله" بدهد، نامگیر او را تسخیر می‌کند.
به این صورت که نام انسان را از او می‌دزدد و به جای آن فرد زندگی می‌کند. در نتیجه فردِ تسخیرشده هیچ اراده‌ای از خود نخواهد داشت. نامگیر از طریق انسانِ تسخیرشده، اعمال بد و خشونت‌آمیز انجام می‌دهد.
بر اساس این باور، برخی از مردم افغانستان باور دارند که اگر فردی بدون دلیل با صدای بلند کلمه "بله" را به زبان بیاورد، احتمالا نامگیر او را صدا می‌زند، پس با عجله دست خود را جلوی دهان آن فرد می‌گیرند تا برای سومین بار " بله" را نگوید.

'Nām-Gir', according to Afghan people's belief, is a creature similar to a Jinn. This creature can take possession of the human body. It calls the victim's name three times, and if the person answers all of them with 'yes', Nām-Gir would possess them.
Whenever Nām-Gir possesses people, it steals their names and lives inside of their body as them. The possessed people won't have any control over their bodies, and Nām-Gir would do horrible things while it lives inside their bodies.
Some people believe that if someone says 'yes' out loud for no reason, it's because they have been called by Nām-Gir, so if this happens people put their hands on their mouths so that they won't say 'yes' three times.
