در بسیاری از نقاط ایران این عقیده وجود داشته که گربه سیاه، در واقع جن است . این جن که در قالب گربه سیاه ظاهر می‌شود زیان‌آور است. به همین دلیل باور داشتند که وقتی شب‌ها گربه سیاهی به اتاقی وارد می‌شود باید به او سلام کرد. اگر کسی هم گربه سیاه را اذیت کند در معرض جنون قرار خواهد گرفت.
اگر کسی بر روی گربه سیاهی آب بریزد، دست‌هایش زگیل درمی‌آورد.
همچنین بخشی از مردم ایران اعتقاد داشتند که گاهی همزاد انسان در لباس گربه سیاه ظاهر می‌شود و اگر این گربه را اذیت کنید، ممکن است به خودتان صدمه بزنید.

In many parts of Iran, there is a belief that the black cat is a Jinn (Genie). It is said that the Jinn appearing as a black cat is of the malicious kind. For this reason, they believe that when a black cat enters a room at night, people should greet it. Bothering or harming a black cat could drive the person into insanity. If someone spills water on a black cat, they might get warts. Some people also thought that a human's Doppelgänger might appear in a black cat costume and that if you bothered the cat, you might hurt yourself.
