《لال》در باور مردمان طبرستان شخصیتی اسطوره‌ای است. در افسانه‌ها آمده است که مادری فرزند شیرخوارش را به دلیل سختی زندگی به جنگل می‌برد و قنداقش را به شاخه توت کهنسالی آویزان می‌کند. درخت سینه چاک می‌کند و کودک رها شده را داخل خود پنهان می‌کند. کودک با تغذیه از شیره درخت رشد می‌کند و بالغ می‌شود، سپس هر سال در آن تاریخ که مادر اورا رها کرد ( روز سیزدهم آبان) از درون درخت خارج می‌شود، در آب رودخانه غسل می‌کند،توسط شاخ و برگ و گیاهان پوششی بر تن می‌کند و به سوی مردم می‌آید. او در حالی که صورتش تیره و سیاه است و تَرکه بلندی از درخت توت در دستش است و همچین از سخن گفتن ناتوان است، خانه به خانه بدنبال مادرش می‌گردد.
مردم که متوجه خواسته او نمی‌شوند به رسم میزبانی به او گردو و ازگیل و انار و شیرینی هدیه می‌دهند و او به رسم تبرک با شاخه توت بر سر ایشان می‌زند . در پایان شب هدایا را میان کودکان تقسیم کرده به جنگل باز می‌گردد تا سال بعد که دوباره بیاید و برای مردم و کودکان شادی به ارمغان بیاورد.
مردم مازندران در سیزدهم آبان جشنی به نام لال شو (شو به معنی شب) برگزار می‌کنند و برخی در هیبت لال درآمده صورتشان را سیاه می‌کنند و کلامی سخن نمی‌گویند. پوششی مانند لال بر تن می‌کنند و تَرکه به‌دست به درب منازل می‌روند، هدیه می‌گیرند و برای تبرک، ترکه توت را به سر آن‌ها می‌زنند.

According to the belief of people from Tabarestan (Northern Iran), there's a mythical creature named 'Lal'. They say that once there was a mother who had a newborn, and because of the hardships in life, she decided to take her newborn to the jungle and hang the child's swaddle from an old berry tree. After she left the place, the tree trunk was cracked open. The tree took the child in and hid it inside Its truck.
The child fed on tree sap and grew up, and every year on the day his mother left him in the jungle, he got out of the tree trunk, washed himself in the river, dressed himself up in leaves, and went to the villages. Unable to speak, with a dark face and a long berry stick in his hand, he knocked on every door to find his mother.
Since he couldn't talk, people couldn't understand him, so they gave him Walnuts, Medler, sweets, and Pomegranates as gifts. He then patted them on the head with his stick as a blessing. At the end of the night, he divided his gifts between the kids and returned to the jungle until the upcoming year.
People from Mazandaran (Northern Iran) celebrate Aban 13th (the 8th month of the year). They named that day the 'Lal-sho'. Some dress up as the boy, paint their faces black and stop speaking. Some dress up as him, take a stick in their hands and go door-to-door to get gifts. After receiving their gift, they pat people's heads with the berry stick as a blessing.
