در باور مردمان گرگان، زنی به نام ننه شو وجود دارد. ننه شو زنی لاغر و قدبلند بوده که سینه‌های دراز داشته. او شب‌ها با کیسه‌ای بر دوش روی سقف خانه‌ها راه می‌رفته و تنها چشمان سرخش دیده می‌شده. گاهی خود را به شکل مادر کودکان درمی‌آورده و با کلک و ترفند، کودکان را داخل کیسه‌اش می‌انداخته و با خود می‌برده است. از این موجود برای ساکت کردن کودکان هنگام شب استفاده می‌شود.
در جنوب استان کرمان نیز موجودی به همین نام وجود دارد. مادر شو (مادر شب) فقط شب‌ها بیرون می‌آمده. از این موجود برای ایجاد خوف و ترس در کودکان و بیرون نرفتن آن‌ها استفاده می‌شود.
در باور مردمان تربت حیدریه‌ی خراسان نیز شخصیتی اهریمنی به نام «مادر شو» وجود داشت. بزرگ‌ترها برای کودکانی که نمی‌خوابیدند، می‌خواندند:
«مادر شو، سینه لِکَتو، بخور و بدو»
سینه لکتو یعنی سینه های افتاده و چروکیده.

In the beliefs of people in Gorgan, there was a woman called [Nane-Sho]. She was a tall and thin woman with long breasts. At night, she grabbed a sack and put it on her shoulders. she walked on the roof of houses with this sack, and only her red eyes were visible. She sometimes made herself look like children's mothers and deceived them. She then put them inside her sack and kidnapped them. People used her to keep children quiet at night.
In southern Kerman (Southeastern Iran), there's a creature with the same name. Parents used it to scare kids from going out. In Torbat-e Heydariyeh (Northeastern Iran), also, there's an evil creature named [Madar-Sho] that people sang a song about to their kids to put them to sleep.
They sang 'Madar-Sho, sine lekato, bokhor o bodo'. [Sine Lekato] means wrinkly chests.
