پاپّوی نام پرنده‌ای در باور مردم گیلان است که بیشتر در بهار و تابستان، هر شب جایی می‌نشیند و تا صبح ناله می‌کند. آواز پاپّوی شبیه به غصه‌خوردن یا تقاضای همدردی است.
پاپّویه در زمان‌های قدیم، پسری بوده است که مادرش را از دست می‌دهد. مشخص نیست مادرش فوت می‌کند یا گم می‌شود. پدر پاپّوی با زنی ازدواج می‌کند که به پاپّوی بدی می‌کرده و او را همیشه آزار می‌داده است.
یک بار که نامادری روی پسر جوان آب‌جوش می‌ریزد، پاپّوی از شدت دلتنگی برای مادرش و فشار سوختگی و درد، آرزو می‌کند تبدیل به پرنده شود. یک شب آرزویش برآورده می‌شود؛ از آن پس، همیشه جایی می‌نشیند و با آوازخواندن با مادرش درددل می‌کند و او را صدا می‌زند. به همین دلیل صدای خواندنش شبیه نجوا و گریه است.

According to the people of Gilan province (northern Iran), 'Pappoi' is the name of a bird that sits every night in spring and summer and cries all night long. Pappoi's singing voice sounds like grieving or a request for sympathy.
Pappoi used to be the name of a boy who had lost his mother. It is not clear whether his mother was dead or lost. Pappoi's father then married another woman. The woman kept abusing and hurting the boy. One day, the woman poured boiling water on Pappoi's hands. Out of pain, he longs for his mother and wishes to turn into a bird. One night his wish comes true and he turns into a bird. Since then, he always sits somewhere and sings and talks to his mother which is why his singing voice sounds like a cry.
