در باور مردمان مشهد قدیم، شخصی به نام «درویش علی» وجود داشت که اصالتاً کرد بود.
در زمان قدیم که کوچه‌ها خاکی بودند، هر کس آرزویی داشته و می‌خواسته برآورده شود، رسم بوده که باید چهل صبح بعد از نماز جلوی خانه‌اش را آب و جارو کند. در روز چهلم «درویش علی» از روبروی خانه‌ی او می‌گذشت و از داخل کشکولش چند فندق به او می‌داده که معمولاً تا حداکثر پنج فندق بوده است. شخصی که حاجت داشت باید به تعداد فندق‌ها چند روز روزه می‌گرفت و هر غروب روزه‌اش را با یکی از فندق‌ها باز می‌کرد. روز آخر به جای خوردن فندق، خواسته‌اش را در کاسه‌ای آب می‌گفت؛ نصف آب را می‌خورد، فندق باقی‌مانده را می‌کاشت و باقی آب را پای آن می‌ریخت تا جوانه بزند. اگر خواسته‌ی فرد به جا بود، فندق جوانه می‌زد و رشد می‌کرد.

In the beliefs of the old Mashhad people, there was a Kurd guy named [Darvish-Ali]. There used to be a tradition that said 'if anyone wants their wish to come true, they need to clean and sweep the front of their house for forty days. On the fortieth day, Darvish-Ali would walk past their home and give them up to five hazelnuts from his Kashkul (a container carried by wandering Dervishes and used to collect money and other goods). The person with the wish had to fast as many times as the number of hazelnuts they got, and they had to break their fast with one of the hazelnuts each night. On the last day of fasting, they had to fill a bowl with water and say their wish to the water inside instead of eating a hazelnut. Then, they had to drink half of the water, put the remaining hazelnut in the soil, and water it with the remaining water in the bowl. If their wish were legitimate, the hazelnut would sprout and grow.
